A question I get asked all the time is “What should we wear for our engagement photos?” I completely get it! When I took my engagement photos years ago, I agonized over finding the perfect outfit. Luckily after all the thought I put into my own session along with all the engagement sessions I’ve photographed since, I know what works and what doesn’t work! Read on for a few of my top tips for choosing your engagement session outfits.
I also included three of my favorite couples outfits at the bottom of the post to help demonstrate what works really well! If you’re still unsure by the end, don’t worry. I help all my couples individually with styling before their session to make sure they has a stress-free, confident look.
DRESS CONFIDENTLY
Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in. Whether that’s ripped up jeans or a summery skirt, you do you! Wear what makes you feel great about yourself and stays true to who you are.
COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER
This is not the time to be matchy-matchy. If you’re both in the same color, you’ll look like an amorphous blob of arms and legs! Choose a wardrobe that keeps you each looking unique, but like you still belong together. Coordinate and complement, don’t match or clash.

CLEAN AND SIMPLE ACCESSORIES
Incorporating items like a statement necklace, leather jacket, fly sneakers, heart-shaped sunglasses or an adorable hat are strongly encouraged, but make sure to avoid going overboard! When in doubt, leave it to one statement piece.
THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS
At all costs, please avoid neon colors, polos, uncomfortable shoes, cargo shorts, logos, hair ties on your wrists and ill-fitting clothing. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!
Jess’s orange polka-dot dress from Madewell helped her stand out against all the greenery during her garden engagement session. Her look was fun and feminine and really showed off her personality! Andrew went with a neutral white short-sleeved button-up that matched Jess’s trendy style, but didn’t complete with it, allowing her to be the star of the show!
Olivia and Christian kept it simple and classy my opting for an all black and white look. Their outfits complement one another’s without looking matchy-matchy. They dressed up their looks with stylish black shoes, and Olivia’s gold triangle necklace was a perfect little cherry on top!
Jocelyn and Adam are a perfect example of making bold choices that work together! Jocelyn’s cardigan and Adam’s plaid shirt and both bright and busy, but their matching blue tones bring their outfits together. Jocelyn tied the pink in her cardigan into her necklace and lip color perfectly making for a great pop of raspberry pink throughout to break up all the blue!
